Summary
- on Christmas Eve night, there is a celebration in Mr Turner's Banner Club
- an old black man, a Southerner bread on a plantation, drops in and looks for his lost son Zachariah
- though Zach is known as drunkard and gambler, the men present do not reveal to the old father the truth
- Mr Turner arranges the meeting of the father and the son and orders the latter to behave properly
- the coming together of the father and the son is a success
Analysis
- black characters speak strong black English dialect in the dialogues
- represents the type of a good and generous white man who approaches coloured people as his equals
- shows that also coloured people may incline to the vices invented by the white (Zach's drinking and gambling)
