- the speaker sarcastically attacks those leading the war without participating in the battles
- develops an image of himself how he would live if he were an elderly and weak man: would live well-off with "scarlet Majors" at the best hotel, light-heartedly making fatal decisions, and after sending all the youths for death he would retire to his house and "die – in bed"
- attacks the ignorance, incapability, and insensitiveness of his uninvolved superiors
